Smash Calendar: Brawl with your favorite characters any day!

However, more versions are on the way and this one will get re-edited because there's a mistake on Mario's side. Also, Sheik really needs to be added, so a few more editions of Smash Calendars are on the way!
You want one? Well, leave a comment!

Rated "A " for Advertisment: A look at the present and future of ads in video games.
credit: Teamxbox.comI know some of you don't like to read too much, so I'll highlight the important stuff!
What would you do if you were playing Halo 3 and either a.) You here High School Musical songs b.)Teletubie songs over the epic scores while you frag your friends? I can guarantee you that unimaginable things will happen. Gamescore won't climb as high, you lose your rep, your girlfriend (or boyfriend) leaves you, your [insert pet] dies and you say goodbye to this cruel world.
Okay, so maybe its not that bad, but it would still screw with the mood. The latest craze in the advertising industry has been "in-game advertising". Of course, video games HAVE become bigger than the movie industry, and of course CEO's want your money. Some of you may not know, but it's becoming really, REALLY big, and it's about to get bigger. So what exactly IS the deal with ads in your console? Will games be plastered like the above pic? Please, sit back, read, and grab a Pepsi.:P
Some games have noticed the $10 increase on many of the next-gen games on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Companies like EA and Ubisoft have said that this is done to help cover the increasing cost for games. With the introduction of all the dual-core processors, Blu-rays, and HDTVs, the rush of technology isn't very easy on developer's pockets (or ours). An average game costs about 10 million to make. A huge portion of that (%40) comes from advertisment and actual game development (that doesn't included employees, royaltee fees, etc.). That was back in the PS2/GCN/Xbox ear, now ith games like Assasin's Creed and Mass Effect, the prices have soared even
more. And Microsoft and Sony are taking a hit losing money on their consoles.A Konami representative has already stated that to cover for the costs of Metal Gear Solid 4, they need to sell about 1 million the first day. I don't know if they are just saying that to push the game or not, but let's say they do. I'd estimate MGS4 costing around $60 million-at least (Final Fantasy VII was around $100million). Not easy money. PS3 sales aren't guaranteeing that right now. The best way to be the problem is in game advertisements.
Companies have already discussed this issue, although its still being worked out. From what it looks like, the ads will be displayed like those ads before the movie at the theatres. You'll probaly see Burger King and Mountain Dew commercials before Halo. Heck, we might even see movie commericals when the game boots up.

However, it won't just be video reels. Companies are strategically placing ads in the game istead of just poping it up. We are seeing product placement. Actually, we're seeing it now. In Splinter Cell, there was the Sony Ericcson P900. In SSX3, there were DNL and Honda advertisments in the billboards and in Red Steel the dumpsters sported the Waste Managment logo. Pikmin has Duracell and Dr. Pepper items laying about everywhere. These aren't all bad, because the placement feel right. They make that connection to our world and help immerse us even more.
It's going to get even bigger with games like Sony's home, which you could call a game about advertisments. The more realistic games become, the more product placemetns we'll see. Grand Theft Auto (remember San Andreas' songs?) could be a big contender too.
Game ads can get in the way, however. Gamers tend to not care about in game ads. What's scary is the fact that ads get out of hand. What if you're playing Gears of War and there's an ad poster for a chick flick or....teh Teletubies?:P Yeah, would set right with me either. It doesn't seem like that now, but what happens when advertisers are willing to spend big bucks? Wouldn't Epic rather get $20 million for advertising Mean Girls than 5 million for Pepsi (okay, bad example, but still)?
I just hope that the ads don't get really ridiculous. Ads on clothing, cars, toilets, what ever is in the game. I don't want ads in the sky. The ads also shouldn't be so obtrusive that they detract from gameplay. Um, yeah, if there was that whole Jessica Alba scene from Sin City playing on a billboard then I don't think I'd ever be able to play a sports game (or any game with billboards) again.
Of course, ads aren't all bad. Would you guys really like it if Madden or Fifa had fake ads instead of Addidas or Nike? The ads, I do say, help make the world more beliveable and real. I think we all have gotten used to ads in some games at one point or another.
With the current success of online gaming, companies are now adding up-to-date advertisements in gaming menus like the Xbox 360 Dashboard and in online lobby menus. This way they can put less ads in games or allow a variety of ads while, say, you download some Disney flick from the Xbox Live Marketplace.
It is expected that about a $2.6 billion increased in ad revenue could result from in game advertsiemtns, as companies are already seeing increases in profits. EA has already seen about a $40 million increase.
The benefits? Of course, we might see cheaper games. But the big bonous would be more features in games. A lot of times game companies cannot put certain ideas in games. For example, Rare had to can the Gameboy camera implementation in the orginal Perfect Dark. With increased profits we might even see less game code screw ups. Remember the broken-legged horse in Assassin's Creed? Well yeah, we probaly wouldn't see that if they could lower the production cost before the game was released.Right now, in-game advertising is stilll being fooled around with. Companies are seeing major benefits (and so are gamers). From the looks of it, they'll be here to stay-as long as we don't start hearing High School Musical songs in Halo.....
As always, please critique my article, so I can get better. Do what you please, comment, fight back. I don't care (no language!).

Snake will sneak on to Xbox 360
This will soon grace your 360 library
Lately, we've been hearing all of these rumors of Metal Gear Solid 4 coming on the Xbox 360. Konami officially denied that it won't be coming to the Xbox 360. I know a lot you are about to plug money on to a PS3, but wait- this isn't true.
"Capcom does not comment on rumors. Devil May Cry 4 is exclusive to PS3. No other announcements have been made."
Ahh. The words of a Capcom representative. They're so true. That's why there's a DMC4 Xbox 360 pack coming only to the Xbox 360.
This is why I think Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is coming to the Xbox 360. Developers always deny that games are going to be exclusive. "It's only coming out for the GCN." Heard that with Resident Evil 4.
But guess what? Companies love money. They LOVE it. Unless they are getting something out of being excluvive (big lump sum of money), it won't stay that way very wrong. I don't care what you fanboys think. Profits are what keep the company going. If I can make $30 million more going multiplatform, why would I only make $5 million? Sometimes you are not even guaranteed that money, and that, sir, means loss.
Okay, so why is Konami going through all of the motions of saying it will be exclusive? Again, profits. If they announce now that MGS4 is coming to the Xbox 360, they'll lose money! Why? Not many people will wan't to buy the PS3 version. Sony won't be very happy about that and that can affect future relationships.
Remember when Nintendo and Capcom made the deal for the Resident Evil exclusitivity? Well Capcom's REmakes (and Zero) didn't sell as expected. Resident Evil 4 was included in that deal. Nint
endo's sales weren't that good, so Capcom ditched them. Not all together. They kept saying RE4 is exclusive, until like 6 months before Re4 was released. Bad move. This lowered RE4's sales by quite a few numbers (for GCN). It was top ten in Famitsu's Most Wanted charts and was dropped to #20. Guess what replaced it? You guessed it: RE4 for PS2."The Xbox 360 is a huge money maker. Why make just a few bucks on the PS3? MGS4 is not cheap to make"
Don't forget how Kojima bragged about how expensive Guns of the Patriot will be to make. They said MGS4 must make a million in its first month to cover costs. With 18 million units of the Xbox 360 sold, there is a very high chance it will come on the 360. Versus less than 10 million on the PS3. Loyalty my ass.
I would not be suprised if a special edition version came to the Xbox 360. Like MGS4: Sustanance. Nobody ever expected MGS2 to come on the original Xbox, and yet it did. Remeber back then when Xbox HAD NO NAME. 360 has way more sales and has a larger name than the 360 right now. The factors now almost guarantee us having MGS4 on the Xbox 360. There are too many Benjamins on the 360 now for Konami to keep it exclusive . Heck, it'd be on the Wii if it weren't for power concerns.
Companies want you to buy the currently scheduled game IN ADDITION to the so called "newly announced" game. We all knew the Xbox 360 Elite was coming out. Micro$oft kept denying it (look at any 2006/mid-2007 EGM mag or google it). People just do it to keep current sales up. Its that feeling of "certainty" they try to give us so we can buy the product, THEN buy the next best thing. Its life. It sucks. But, hey, its business.
Remember, these are my opinions. If you feel differently, please comment. I could be wrong. But I know I am right!:P
Oh, and could ya critique my article?

Video Gaming Dead In '08: What games are there left to buy?
But that's not happening this generation. What's odd is that the big guns have already been launched in 2007. Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Mass Effect-massive killer apps really- were released by Nintendo and Microsoft. Sony released UTIII, Ratchet and Clank:Future.
Sure, we all love we got those games right now, but what about 2008? Right now it looks a bit bleak. Don't get me wrong, there are decent titles, but nothing defining. That is except Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Super Smash Bros. Brawl and GTA. But I don't think those games alone are enough (to me they are) to make someone to go out and buy a console. Let's see, Devil May Cry 4 will be awesome. Grand Theft Auto 4 will be awesome too and don't for get about Mario Kart. But these games look more like visual enhancements and stuff we expect.
One odd thing though, is that most of these games are being released towards the first and second quarters of the year. Odd indeed. Games like Resident Evil 5 won't come out until 2009. Don't get me wrong, I'll be happy with these games alone for the year, but I'm concerened about fall.
Maybe there is something, because E3 hasn't happened yet. Perhaps they'll surprise us with new IPs or something. But still, around this time we'd know that games will be out next fall. Per haps its too early to think about it.
But what do you think? Are you just happy with the above mentined games? How do you think fall of '08 will be? Anything else?

Brawl has gone Gold-will its sales too?
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is probaly the most anticipated game for Wii owners- the hardcore ones at least. Just recently has Brawl gone gold. For those of you that don’t know what that means, it means when a game is completely done and a master disc is sent for the factory to copy. Brawl has been anticipated for over 5 years, but I wonder will its sales reach the hype?
I’m wondering this because gamers have been able to preorder Brawl for a few months now, but there has been nothing earth-shattering about it. Around this time, Halo 3 has had at least 1 million preorders. Sure, the Halo series has a lot of hype, but remember Melee sold around the same amount as the first Halo.
What could be wrong? Maybe the lack of Wii’s? No, because the Wii has sold more than the Xbox 360. Maybe because its mostly casual gamers. It’s really hard to tell at this point.

Mario, you may feel hot, but your sales aren’t.
I’m pretty sure Super Smash Bros. Brawl will sell very well. But I don’t think its going to sell like most people think it will. Look at Super Mario Galaxy’s sales-especially in Japan. It sold way below expectations. Very good if this was an amauetur’s sales but I wouldn’t consider it great because it is the true successor to Super Mario 64.
If Brawl doesn’t sell past a million in its first month or two, then I feel for Wii’s future. As of right now, the software sales suck. Its inevitable that Wii’s hardware sales are going to go down. I work at a video game store and the day after Christmas, Wii’s hype was immediately shot down. We had signs the Wii was in stock, and it took the whole day to sell out. And most people I checked out bought it to sell it on ebay.
I really hope Brawl sales as much as we hope. If it does, I belive the other companies have even more to fear.
